Who Needs a Student Visa for Germany?

You will need a student visa if:

You are a citizen of a country that requires a visa to enter Germany.
You are from a country that allows short stays (up to 90 days) without a visa, but your study program lasts longer than 90 days.

Checklist for a German student visa

Passport	Valid passport (issued within the last 10 years) with at least two empty pages. Passports with observations on the front data page are not accepted.
Application Form & Declaration	Completed and signed application form & declaration (as per Section 54 of the Residence Act).
Declaration for Contact & Representation	A signed declaration provides additional contact and details on legal representation.
Copy of Passport Data Page	A4-sized copy of the passport’s data page.
Statement of Purpose (SOP) / Motivation Letter	A well-written SOP explaining your study plans and motivation.
APS Certificate	Certificate issued by the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS). Visit www.aps-india.de for details.
Proof of Admission	An official offer letter from the university/preparatory college (original + 2 copies) with details on the language of instruction.
Proof of Language Skills	The admission letter will mention no proof of language of instruction proficiency (B2 level or higher). Only Goethe Institut, Max Mueller Bhavan, ÖSD, IELTS, TOEFL, or Cambridge Assessment English certificates are acceptable. Acceptance of exemption letters and any online certificates is out of the question.
Academic Certificates	Original + 2 copies of all previous academic qualification certificates.
Curriculum Vitae (CV)	Detailed CV outlining educational background and experience.
Proof of Financial Means	One of the following: – Confirmation of a German/EU scholarship – “Verpflichtungserklärung” (Formal obligation letter) from a sponsor in Germany – Blocked account with €11,904 for the first year of study.
Blocked Account Information	Proof of financial sufficiency can be provided via a blocked bank account, which you may appoint at your end. The Federal Foreign Office website contains further details.

Processing time for a German student visa varies depending on your country and the German Embassy or Consulate where you apply. It takes an average of 25 days to get a decision.
