What is the Ireland Student Visa?

The Ireland student visa, officially called a Study Visa (Type C or D), is issued by the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) and allows international students to reside in Ireland for the duration of their studies at a recognized Irish institution. Students from outside the EU/EEA require this visa to study in Ireland.

Note: Courses longer than 3 months require a long-stay student visa (Type D). Short courses under 3 months may qualify for a Type C visa.

Secure your offer letter from an Irish institution listed on the Irish Register of Quality Employers (ILEP). This is your most critical document.

02 Pay Tuition Fees

Pay your tuition fees (full or partial) before applying for your visa. Proof of payment is a mandatory Ireland student visa document.

03 Apply Online via AVATS

Submit your visa application through the AVATS (Automated Visa Application Tracking System) portal. Finish the application, attach the documents and pay the visa fee.

04 Submit Biometrics & Documents

Upon the online submission, present your biometrics and original documents to your nearest Irish Embassy or Visa Application Centre.

05 Wait for a Decision

Ireland student visa processing time typically takes 4-8 weeks. Track your application status through the AVATS portal.

06 Receive Your Visa

Once approved, your visa is stamped in your passport. For long-stay visas, you'll receive a single-entry visa to travel to Ireland.

07 Register with GNIB/IRP on Arrival

Within 90 days of arrival, register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) or Irish Registration Office to receive your Irish Residence Permit (IRP card). This is mandatory.

08 Renew IRP Annually

As long as you are enrolled, you have to renew your IRP card on an annual basis. Maintain your enrolment and academic performance at an appropriate level.
