Overview The Buchanan Scholarship provides partial funding of NZD 10,000 for a Master’s by research degree focused on New Zealand’s history, cultures, or society at Victoria University of Wellington.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be full‑time Master’s by thesis students researching New Zealand’s history, cultures, or society, including those transferring from other universities. Both domestic and international students are eligible.

Selection Criteria

The selection process follows these steps:

1. Applicants must be enrolled or intend to enrol full‑time in a Master’s by thesis at Victoria University of Wellington, conducting research in New Zealand’s history, cultures, or society.
2. Both domestic and international students are eligible.
3. Selection is primarily based on academic merit and research suitability, with financial need considered only when applicants are otherwise comparable; the scholarship may not be awarded if no suitable candidate is found.

Application Process A completed online application must be submitted by the closing date of 1 November 2025. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Award Details The scholarship is valued at NZD 20,000 and provides partial funding toward tuition and related costs.

Important Notes

The recipient must write a letter of thanks to the donor, the scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year, and it may be held alongside other awards.
