The Paul E. Hirshson Byline Scholarship supports students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in Journalism at Northeastern University’s College of Arts, Media and Design. This award provides partial funding and varies in amount, and it is open to applicants of all nationalities.

Application Details

Eligibility Criteria

• The scholarship is open to all nationals.
• Applicants must be enrolled in Undergraduate or Graduate courses in Journalism.
• Selection considers demonstration of financial need, academic achievement, and professional ethics.

Selection Process

Candidates are required to submit portfolios as part of their application. Depending on their area of interest, applicants should submit the requested number of samples from one of the following categories:

• Writing: 3-5 print articles (reviews, reportage, or opinion pieces).
• Audio: 2-3 stories recorded and/or reported by the applicant.
• Video: 2-3 stories shot and/or reported by the applicant.
• Photos: 5-6 photos and/or a published photo essay.
• Layout/Design: 2-3 pages.

Additionally, applicants must submit a Personal Statement and 2-6 items that may include images (up to 5 MB each), video (up to 60 MB each), audio (up to 60 MB each), and PDFs (up to 10 MB each). Links to media from YouTube and Vimeo are also accepted.
