The Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program 2027

The Smithsonian Institution offers graduate fellowships for international scholars to conduct independent research at its 19 research centers. Fellowships support PhD, postdoctoral, and research scientist positions in selected fields of study.

Eligibility:

• Open to US and non-US citizens.
• English fluency required for non-native speakers.
• Past fellowship recipients may reapply.
• Current Smithsonian employees/contractors cannot hold a fellowship simultaneously.
• Recent hires require prior approval for fellowship consideration.

Application Requirements:

• Submit a research proposal with methodology, goals, co-advisor identification, and Smithsonian staff collaboration plan.
• Include curriculum vitae, official transcripts, and a one-page research abstract.
• Provide a research timetable, budget, bibliography, and contact details for two referees.

Selection Criteria:

• Evaluation considers how the Smithsonian’s resources enhance the research.

Program Value:

• Pre-doctoral Fellowships: USD 45,000 per year.
• Postdoctoral Fellowships: USD 57,000 per year.
• Senior Fellowships: USD 57,000 per year.
• 10-week pre-doctoral fellowships provide USD 10,000 (no research allowances).
