Tom Winship Scholarship at Northeastern University

The Tom Winship Scholarship at Northeastern University’s College of Arts, Media and Design supports students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in Journalism. This award provides partial funding and stipends to assist with educational costs. The scholarship is open to all nationalities and gives preference to first-generation college students and those who have resided in Boston for several years.

Eligibility is extended to full-time journalism students who can demonstrate financial need. Applicants must submit a portfolio showcasing prior experience in editing and writing for traditional or online publications, or in broadcast and multimedia journalism. Depending on their area of interest, candidates should submit writing samples (3-5 articles), audio stories (2-3 recordings), video stories (2-3 productions), photo essays (5-6 images), or layout/design pages (2-3 pages).

In addition to the portfolio, applicants are required to submit a personal statement along with 2-6 (for the video category="inline-images" itemprop="image">Selection Process:

• Writing: 3-5 print articles (reviews, reportage, or opinion pieces).
• Audio: 2-3 stories recorded and/or reported by you.
• Video: 2-3 stories shot and/or reported by you.
• Photos: 5-6 photos and/or a published photo essay.
• Layout/Design: 2-3 pages.

Candidates may also include up to 5 MB images, 60 MB video, 60 MB audio, or 10 MB PDFs, or link to media from YouTube and Vimeo. The scholarship can be used to support international travel and study, faculty-led research, or student-led creative projects. Funding may be renewed in succeeding years if the recipient remains a journalism student in good standing.
