The Universities Ireland History Bursary provides up to two bursaries of €13,000 each for research on the 1912‑1923 period in Irish history. The award supports MA, M.Phil, M.Litt, Ph.D, or D.Litt projects related to this era, including work on the impact of 2022 events.

Application Details

Applications must be submitted by 12 May 2023. The scholarship is open to students currently enrolled or who have graduated within the past five years from an Irish or British university, provided they have been accepted onto a postgraduate course.

Applicants must submit a 2,000‑word essay outlining their proposed research topic. Successful candidates are required to attend the Universities Ireland conference “Reflecting on a Decade of War and Revolution in Ireland 1912‑1923” in 2022.

Eligibility Criteria

• Open to students studying for MA, M.Phil, M.Litt, Ph.D, or D.Phil by research or a relevant master’s degree.
• Must be currently enrolled or have graduated within the last five years from a higher education institution.
• Research must focus on the 1912‑1923 period in Ireland.
• Applicants cannot have already begun their postgraduate course.
• Students with a primary degree from any country are eligible.

Value and Payment Schedule

The bursary is partially funded, offering up to €13,000. Payments are made in two installments: 50 % at the start of the first postgraduate year in autumn 2023 and the remaining 50 % in June 2024, contingent on submission of a progress report.
