Will McDonough Scholarship at Northeastern University

The Will McDonough Scholarship at Northeastern University's College of Arts, Media and Design supports undergraduate Journalism students with partial funding that varies by recipient. This merit-based award is open to all nationals and requires applicants to be full-time undergraduate students completing co-op assignments at the Boston Globe.

Eligibility Criteria

• Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students.
• Completion of co-op assignments at the Boston Globe is required.
• Demonstration of financial need is mandatory.
• Students must maintain good academic standing and outstanding co-op performance.

Application Process

Prospective students can apply through the official admissions portal. The application deadline is 10 August 2026. Required materials include a portfolio demonstrating prior experience in editing and writing for traditional or online publications, or broadcast/multimedia journalism.

• Writing samples: 3-5 print articles (reviews, reportage, or opinion pieces).
• Audio: 2-3 recorded and/or reported stories.
• Video: 2-3 stories shot and/or reported.
• Photos: 5-6 photos or a published photo essay.
• Layout/Design: 2-3 pages of work.

Additionally, applicants must submit a Personal Statement and 2-6 media items (images up to 5 MB, video up to 60 MB, audio up to 60 MB, PDFs up to 10 MB) or link to media from YouTube and Vimeo.

Selection Process

The Sports Editor of the Boston Globe, in consultation with Northeastern’s School of Journalism, selects the recipient from full-time undergraduate students completing co-op assignments at the Globe. Selected students receive partial funding toward their tuition and related expenses.
