Studying abroad offers the exciting benefits of seeing the world, learning new cultures, having great career opportunities, finding new friends, and developing your personality. However, the main hurdle with studying abroad is expenses. To reduce the financial burden, students often get a scholarship for their undergraduate studies so that they can study without any obligation.

Leading nations, including the USA, the UK, and Canada, provide undergraduate study abroad scholarships for prospective students. This article explores the leading undergraduate scholarship programs in these countries.

Cornell University Tata Scholarship

This scholarship supports Indian students pursuing undergraduate study at Cornell University. Rather than focusing on the number of students supported in a given year, the criteria that actually matter for eligibility are: you must have attended secondary school in India, hold admission (or be admitted) to Cornell’s undergraduate program, and be eligible for need-based financial aid under Cornell’s standard assessment. Some preferred fields of study may apply; check Cornell’s official admissions page for current programme guidance.

Yale University Need-Based Financial Aid

The previous framing of this as a merit-based award, considering academics, sports, or music, isn’t accurate. Yale College does not award merit or athletic scholarships. According to Yale’s own financial aid office, all undergraduate financial aid, for domestic and international students alike, is awarded purely on demonstrated financial need, and Yale operates a need-blind admissions policy regardless of citizenship. As per an update as of January 2026 for the academic year starting from 2026-27, those families earning less than $100,000 have zero percent parent contribution, and those families earning up to $200,000 usually qualify for financial aid that more than covers the cost of tuition. There is no need for applying separately for any scholarship; such applicants are considered through the financial aid process.

Clark Global Scholarship Program

The admitted international students automatically get consideration for such scholarships through the program on the basis of excellence and merit, with preference being accorded to those who excel in academics as well as other qualities. There is no need for any separate application.

Global Scholarship, Boise State University

Boise State’s international undergraduate scholarship structure has changed materially since this page was last updated, so the figures here have been corrected. Current awards range roughly from $5,000 to $17,000 per year depending on which specific scholarship you’re automatically considered for. The Global Scholarship itself is generally in the $5,000 to $7,000/year range, while the Ridgeline and Summit awards provide $5,000 and $10,000 respectively. For the 2026-27 cycle, the Spring 2027 deadline is 1 October 2026, and the Fall 2027 deadline is 15 December 2026.

Top Scholarships for Undergraduates in the UK

Several UK scholarships for Indian and international students exist to offset this. Some of the top study abroad scholarships for undergraduates in the UK are below.

Undergraduate Excellence Scholarship – International (Lancaster University)

For 2026 entry; check Lancaster’s official page for the current cycle

Reach Oxford Scholarship

This remains one of the UK’s strongest fully funded undergraduate options, but it’s specifically targeted at students from Oxford’s list of eligible low-income countries, rather than being framed loosely around “financial need, social commitment, and lack of ability to study in home country.” For 2027 entry, applications open in January 2027, with a deadline of 26 January 2027 at 12 noon UK time. Coverage includes course fees, a living-cost grant, and one return airfare per year, for students who commit to returning to their home country after their studies.

Global Futures Scholarship, University of Manchester

This has been updated for the 2027 entry cycle. Eligible South Asian undergraduate students, including India-domiciled applicants, can now receive £36,000 total, paid as £12,000 per year over three years, a meaningfully larger figure than the previous £24,000 total. Selection is based on academic merit and the strength of your personal statement. The application deadline for 2027 entry is 30 March 2027, and you apply after receiving your offer from Manchester.

Undergraduate Excellence Scholarship – International, Lancaster University

The previous “Lancaster Global Scholarship” naming and £2,000/year figure are outdated. For 2026 entry, Lancaster’s current relevant award is the Undergraduate Excellence Scholarship – International, which provides £3,000 per year to eligible high-achieving international students who achieve A*AA or above at A level (or the equivalent) and are studying a full-time undergraduate program at the university.

Top Scholarships in Canada for Undergraduate Students

Indian students who study abroad frequently choose Canada for its high-quality education system, post-study work opportunities, and immigration pathways. Because of the cost of living and tuition, students often look into Canada scholarships for Indian and international students alongside university-specific awards. Some of the top UG scholarships in Canada are below.

  • Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship
  • University of Calgary International Entrance Scholarship
  • UBC International Scholars Program
  • International Leader of Tomorrow Award
  • York University International Entrance Scholarships

Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship

This is genuinely one of Canada’s strongest fully funded undergraduate awards, awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, creativity, and recognised school leadership. Rather than list this as “variable,” it’s worth being specific: the scholarship covers tuition, books, incidental fees, and full residence support for four years at the University of Toronto. Students must be in their final year of senior secondary school at the time of nomination. For the 2027 entry cycle, school nomination is due 9 October 2026, the University of Toronto admission application is due 16 October 2026, and the separate scholarship application is due 6 November 2026.

University of Calgary International Entrance Scholarship

It is still relevant because there is an award of $20,000 per year which can be renewed, depending on certain conditions, based on academic performance and provided that the student meets the university’s requirements in terms of English proficiency. One more thing to take into consideration: Calgary gives out only two such awards per year; hence, it is quite competitive. Moreover, one has to keep at least a 2.60 GPA.

UBC International Scholars Program

The previous “International Leader of Tomorrow Award” naming reflects an older convention. This award now sits under UBC’s broader International Scholars Program. It requires demonstrated academic achievement and financial need, alongside meeting UBC’s standard admission requirements. For 2027 intake, applications open in early October 2026.

York University International Entrance Scholarships

Eligibility bands have changed for the Fall 2026 cycle. Students with a 90% or higher final admission average receive the International Scholarship of Distinction, worth up to $37,500. Those in the 80 to 89.9% range receive a Merit Award worth up to $25,000. Those in the 75 to 79.9% range receive a one-time $5,000 award. All three are automatically considered based on your final admission average, with no separate application required.

Top Undergraduate Scholarships in Ireland

Ireland provides a number of UG scholarships for international students because of the high tuition and living expenses, which may be burdensome. Fortunately, there are several scholarships available to fill the gap. Some of the top UG scholarships in Ireland are:

  • Trinity Global Excellence Undergraduate Scholarship
  • University of Galway Global Scholarships

Trinity Global Excellence Undergraduate Scholarship

The previous “Trinity College Dublin – India Undergraduate Scholarships” naming and €3,000 to €5,000 range aren’t quite accurate to the current award. Trinity’s relevant scholarship is properly named the Trinity Global Excellence Undergraduate Scholarship, and it isn’t limited to Indian applicants specifically. It provides a €2,000 to €5,000 tuition reduction for the first year of study, with the exact amount depending on your region, and some courses are excluded from eligibility. Check Trinity’s current scholarship page for the excluded-course list before applying.

University of Galway Global Scholarships

The previous €2,000 to €10,000 range was presented too generically. Galway actually runs several distinct international undergraduate scholarship schemes rather than one single award with a wide range, so it’s worth identifying the specific scheme you’re eligible for (rather than a blended range) and checking that scheme’s own exact amount and eligibility criteria on Galway’s official Global Scholarships page.

Top Scholarships in Australia for Undergraduates

Australia is home to some of the world’s top universities, and to attract students from all over the world, it offers a variety of overseas education scholarships. Some of the top scholarships in Australia for Indian and international students are:

  • Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship and Melbourne International Excellence Scholarship
  • ANU Chancellor’s International Scholarship

Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship and Melbourne International Excellence Scholarship

Firstly, the percentage of fee reduction will vary based on when a student commences their course: students who will commence studies prior to 2027 will get 25%, whereas those who start from 2027 onwards will get 20%. Secondly, now there is another program that is offered by Melbourne for 2027 intake onwards: the International Excellence Scholarship, where again, the reduction is 20%. This is a completely different program.

ANU Chancellor’s International Scholarship

There’s a genuine discrepancy worth flagging here rather than resolving with false confidence. This scholarship has historically offered a 25% or 50% tuition fee waiver, automatically considered for eligible international undergraduate and postgraduate applicants. Some recently checked sources describe it as currently open and automatic; the brief for this update flagged it as currently unavailable based on a direct check of ANU’s page. Given that conflict, this page states the scholarship’s structure (25% or 50% waiver, automatic consideration when active) but explicitly flags that its live status should be confirmed directly on ANU’s official scholarships page immediately before publishing, rather than asserting either “open” or “unavailable” without a fresh, dated check.

Fully Funded Undergraduate Scholarships by Country

Fully funded undergraduate scholarships can cover most major study expenses, while partial scholarships usually provide only a tuition fee reduction. Always check the exact coverage before applying, since funding varies significantly by scholarship and country.

  • Canada: The Lester B. Pearson Scholarship offers comprehensive funding, including tuition, books, incidental fees, and residence support, for four years.
  • UK: The Reach Oxford Scholarship covers course fees, living costs, and one annual return airfare, for students from Oxford’s list of eligible low-income countries.
  • UK: The Manchester Global Futures Scholarship provides substantial but partial tuition support (£36,000 over three years for the 2027 cycle), not full funding.
  • Australia: Melbourne’s undergraduate scholarships offer partial tuition fee support (20% to 25% remission, depending on intake year and scheme), not full funding.
  • USA: Yale’s need-based financial aid can meet 100% of demonstrated need for admitted students, which functions as comprehensive funding for many families, though it’s technically financial aid rather than a standalone “scholarship” in the traditional sense.

How to Apply for Undergraduate Scholarships Abroad

Applying for scholarships starts with identifying opportunities that match your destination, course, academic record and eligibility. Whether you are exploring scholarships in USA for Indian students or funding options in the UK, Canada or other countries, check each scholarship’s official requirements before applying.

  • Shortlist scholarships based on country and university.
  • Review academic and nationality requirements.
  • Note application deadlines and intake dates.
  • Prepare transcripts, essays, SOPs and references.
  • Apply through the official university or scholarship portal.
  • Track applications and respond to additional requests on time.

You can also find undergraduate scholarships for your profile instead of applying to opportunities that may not match your eligibility.

Education Loans for Undergraduate Study Abroad

Scholarships may reduce your overall study costs, but they may not always cover your complete tuition and living expenses. An education loan can help bridge the remaining funding gap.

Depending on the lender and your eligibility, an education loan may cover:

  • Tuition and university fees
  • Accommodation and living expenses
  • Books and study materials
  • Travel expenses
  • Insurance and other eligible costs

Students can compare secured, unsecured, cosigner and no cosigner loan options based on their destination, university and financial profile.

Tips for Applying for Undergraduate Scholarships Around the World

To successfully apply for undergraduate scholarships around the world, keep these in mind:

  • Research thoroughly
  • Identify relevant scholarships for your specific profile and destination
  • Understand and fulfil eligibility criteria exactly as published, not as generally assumed
  • Apply early, since several of the strongest awards (like Pearson and Reach Oxford) have nomination or application deadlines that fall well before the university’s general admission deadline
  • Apply to multiple scholarships rather than relying on one
  • Proofread your application
  • Prepare necessary documents in advance
  • Explore multiple sources, including university-specific, government, and independent scholarships

If your scholarship doesn’t cover your full cost of studying abroad, it’s worth exploring education loans for studying abroad alongside your scholarship search, since most of the awards above (with a small number of fully funded exceptions like Pearson and Reach Oxford) are partial rather than comprehensive. For a broader look at planning your budget by destination, our guides on study abroad admission guidance and country-specific cost of living can help you plan the full picture, not just the scholarship piece.
