US Resumes Student Visas for Indian Students in 2025: New Hurdles & Hope

US Student Visa

“The students? Well, we want to have great students here. We just don’t want students that are causing trouble. We want to have students. I want to have foreign students.” – US President Donald Trump.

The dream of studying in the USA continues to inspire Indian students every year. However, with the recent visa policy changes in the US, there may be a few hurdles in your study abroad journey to the US. Processing delays to the inspection of social media accounts of applicants, Indian students now have to contend with a longer route.

Visa Processing Resumes – With a Catch

After a temporary global pause on visas, the US has resumed processing student F‑1 (academic), M‑1 (vocational), and J‑1 (exchange visitor) visas. But this change comes with a new and yet controversial requirement: mandatory screening of social media accounts.

Students who plan to study abroad in the USA must provide access to their social media profiles (which must be set to public). The US consular offices will judge whether the student profile shows any signs of hostility toward the US government, culture, or US citizens.

While the US State Department claims the move enhances security, some argue it may invade freedom of speech and may discourage students from applying.
