TOEFL Exam Eligibility Criteria

The TOEFL Exam does not specify strict eligibility criteria. Applicants are required to have completed their 10+2 education from an accredited institution to be eligible for the TOEFL exam. Additionally, candidates must be at least 18 years old to appear for the exam. If a candidate is younger than 18, they can still take the test, but in this case, they must be accompanied by their parents during the TOEFL registration process.

Other essential TOEFL eligibility requirements include a printout of the confirmation form containing the registration number, a valid photo identification card, and a passport. Candidates planning to take the TOEFL exam at home must meet specific eligibility criteria regarding equipment, environment, speaker, and camera requirements.

Eligibility for the TOEFL entrance exam

It’s important to note that the TOEFL test, which includes both TOEFL-IBT and TOEFL-PBT, is open to all individuals.

To be eligible for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), you must have completed your 10+2 education from a recognized Indian Board or University. This test suits high school students and individuals pursuing higher education who aim to obtain their TOEFL scores. The TOEFL score measures your English language proficiency, enabling you to pursue academic and professional opportunities in the United States and beyond. Many institutions in the United States and worldwide accept TOEFL scores.

However, there are exceptions, and some institutions do not require TOEFL scores from certain international applicants. These exceptions encompass:

  • Non-native speakers holding degrees or diplomas from post-secondary institutions in English-speaking countries like the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand.
  • Non-native speakers who have completed a minimum of a two-year course of study in which English was the primary language of instruction.
  • Students who have transferred from institutions in the United States or Canada and have a record of well-evaluated academic coursework aligned with the specific requirements and duration of the TOEFL test.
  • Non-native speakers who have taken the TOEFL test within the past two years.
  • Non-native speakers who have successfully engaged in academic coursework at English-speaking schools in an English-speaking country for a designated period, typically around two years.

These eligibility criteria provide flexibility for many applicants, accommodating diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Educational Qualification and Age Limit for TOEFL Exam Eligibility

The TOEFL entrance exam eligibility primarily focuses on candidates who have successfully completed their 10+2 education from a recognized Indian board. In simpler terms, candidates are only required to have passed their grade 12 or an equivalent qualification to be eligible to take the exam. Additionally, individuals can also meet TOEFL eligibility criteria while still in the process of completing their high school education.

TOEFL Eligibility Requirements for Leading Universities

Regarding TOEFL eligibility criteria, candidates preparing for the TOEFL exam will find that the ETS, the organization responsible for the TOEFL test, does not prescribe specific guidelines for TOEFL 2025 eligibility. As the ETS TOEFL tests English language proficiency, students should consult the language requirements of the particular college or university they are applying to.

For individuals whose native language is not English, taking the TOEFL exam is typically necessary. Universities in prominent English-speaking nations such as the United States and Canada often require students to demonstrate their language proficiency for admission to their educational institutions. Besides students, professionals may also undertake the TOEFL exam, particularly when it is a requirement for obtaining a student visa.
