Shortlisting US Universities for Master's: 3-Tier Strategy

Every student should apply to 8 to 12 universities spread across three tiers. Build your list based on your GRE score, GPA, and profile strength, not on brand names alone.

Category Recommended
No. of Schools
Description Universities Options Application Rule
Ambitious 2 to 3 schools Schools slightly above your current profile. Low acceptance rates, but worth applying to if your SOP and letters of recommendation are strong.
  • M7 Universities
  • Ivy League
Apply only if you meet at least 80% of the stated profile criteria. These are not lottery picks.
Target 5 to 6 schools Your highest-probability admits. These should closely match your GRE, GPA, and experience profile and form the core of your applications.
  • University of Michigan
  • Purdue University
  • Texas A & M University
  • University of Wisconsin–Madison
  • North Carolina State University
Your GRE should be at or above the university’s published average. Do not compromise on SOP quality.
Safe 2 to 3 schools Schools where your profile is comfortably above average. These help ensure at least one confirmed admit.
  • University at Buffalo (SUNY)
  • Stevens Institute of Technology
  • Illinois Institute of Technology
  • University of Texas at Dallas
Write a strong, school-specific SOP even for safe universities. A strong ROI matters more than rank alone.

F-1 Visa Process After Your US Admit

Once you receive your I-20, the visa process begins.

Major USCIS Changes in 2026
  • USCIS has proposed and discussed changes to F-1 duration policies in recent years, but students should verify current rules directly through official USCIS updates.
  • Most F-1 students are now admitted for:
    1. Up to 4 years, or
    2. The length of the academic program (whichever is shorter).
  • Students with longer programs must apply separately to USCIS for an extension of stay.

Reduced Grace Period

The post-study grace period was reduced:

  1. Earlier: 60 days
  2. Now: 30 days

Students must quickly:

  1. Apply for OPT
  2. Change visa status
  3. Prepare for departure after graduation
Increased OPT Filing Fees

USCIS increased the Form I-765 filing fee:

  1. Previous fee: $1,685
  2. New fee (2026): $1,780
OPT + STEM OPT Duration
  • Standard OPT duration: 12 months
  • STEM OPT extension: 24 months
  • Total possible work authorization: 3 years

Why This Matters

Gives students:

  • More time to gain US work experience
  • Multiple H-1B lottery attempts
  • Reduced immediate visa pressure after graduation

STEM OPT Eligibility Requirements

  • Degree must be in an eligible STEM field
  • University must be:
    • SEVP-certified
    • Accredited
  • Employer must participate in E-Verify

F-1 Visa Documents Required (Mandatory Documents)

  • Valid I-20 from an SEVP-approved university
  • SEVIS fee receipt (Form I-901)
  • DS-160 confirmation form
  • Visa interview appointment confirmation
  • Education loan sanction letter or financial proof
  • University admit letter and academic records
  • Bank statements showing sufficient Year-1 funding

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the GRE mandatory for a Master's in the USA in 2026?

As of 2026, 65 to 70% of universities have made the GRE optional. Top universities still recommend or prefer it, particularly for research-track MS programs and funding considerations. Check the specific policy for each program before deciding whether to sit the exam. A strong voluntary GRE score can still differentiate your application even at GRE-optional programs.

Most US universities require a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Top 20 programs typically expect 3.5 and above. A lower GPA can be offset by a strong GRE score, relevant research or work experience, and a compelling SOP.

For Fall 2027 entry, most US universities open applications between August and October 2026. Begin your GRE or GMAT preparation by January 2026 and your SOP drafting by July 2026 at the latest.

STEM Master's graduates receive 12 months of standard OPT plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving a total of 3 years of work authorisation. During STEM OPT, you can enter the H-1B lottery multiple times — three attempts are possible within the full 36-month period for most graduates.

USCIS replaced the "Duration of Status" framework with a fixed 4-year admission period. The grace period after graduation was cut from 60 to 30 days, and the OPT filing fee increased to $1,780. Students in programs expected to exceed four years must now file a formal extension with USCIS.

Work experience is not mandatory for most MS programs in the USA. Fresh graduates form over 60% of MS admits in STEM programs. MBA programs are the exception — they require 2 to 5 years of professional experience.

You need a valid I-20 from your SEVP-approved university, the SEVIS fee receipt (Form I-901), a completed DS-160 form, your admit letter, academic records, and financial proof. For Indian students, an education loan sanction letter serves as strong financial evidence at the consulate interview.
